"Help us Build it!"
I came up with this idea for children (and adults), who ride bicycles or walk on city streets or country roads, how to react when a dog (or dogs) approach you while riding a bike or walking! I teach this technique to students when speaking at the various schools in Carroll County (Ohio). CCAPL President, Eileen Rohrer
"STOP-PLANT-FOLD!" Based on the "Stop-Drop-Roll" the Fire Departments teach us!
PLEASE PRINT OUT AND SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS, AND THOSE WHO WALK OR RIDE BICYCLES ON YOUR ROAD!
The "STOP-PLANT-FOLD" concept goes like this.
You cannot outrun a dog on a bicycle! If you do not stop, they may grab your pant leg or shoe, or jump on or at you, and cause you to crash to the ground and then may attack you!
If a child or adult is riding a bicycle or walking, and a dog (s) start to come at you, "STOP" walking or "STOP" your bicycle.
Then "PLANT" your feet firmly on the ground. If riding a bicycle, "STOP" the bicycle and stand with your feet planted firmly on both sides of the bicycle.
Then, "FOLD" your arms over your chest to protect your hands! Do not try to bat the dog away, as this may also cause them to be defensive and might attack or jump on you!
Dogs react to situations such as a fast moving bicycle or people walking on the road and want to check it all out!
Their first instinct is to protect their owners and property. So, once they reach you, they more than likely will try to smell you- as this is another way of gathering information of who and what you are!
When they approach you, keep your arms folded, and DO NOT SCREAM, YELL, SHOUT, OR TRY TO HIT, KICK OR STRIKE THE DOG (S) as this will only cause the dog (s) to be more defensive and may bite or grab at you or jump on you! Give the dog a chance to sniff you and probably your bike too! DO NOT STARE AT THE DOG OR LOOK THE DOG IN THE EYE- as this can also be a warning sign to the dog to be on the defensive and the dog may attack or bite!
Remain calm. Hopefully the owners will call their dogs back to them, or the dog will leave and go back to where it came from. Once the dog leaves, continue walking or riding your bicycle, but be cautious---it may return to you! So again, you may have to STOP-PLANT-FOLD again to be safe!
